FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?
More than a martial art, Capoeira is also a social event filled with tradition and history. Some say Capoeira was created by African slaves, in Brazil, approximately 400 years ago as a martial art. Others believe it is simply a crossing of many West African cultures during the slave trade, galvanising into a single cultural manifestation. What Capoeira surely is though is a very unique art form. It brings together beauty, power, mental balance, physical conditioning, self-defence, music and a profound sense of art, all at once.
IS CAPOEIRA A FIGHT OR A DANCE?
Capoeira combines elements of fight and acrobatics and may be misconstrued as a dance due to the flowing and collaborative movements.
DO YOU HAVE BEGINNER CLASSES?

I HAVE TRAINED WITH A DIFFERENT GROUP BEFORE, CAN I JOIN YOUR CLASSES?
Yes. We have many students from around the world and from different groups training with us. You may need to get permission from your Master though. If you move around from different groups you may find it hard to earn new cords at each batizado.
WHAT'S THE ROLE OF MUSIC IN CAPOEIRA?
The one thing that stands out for someone witnessing a Capoeira game for the first time is the music. The music and lyrics play a big part in the way the game or jogo is conducted. Different rhythms call for a different speed and type of game. For example, the rhythm or song may call for the game to be slow and filled with trickery, fast and aggressive, or may call for the player to relax and show their best moves without fear of attack. Typical instruments used are the Berimbau, Pandeiro and Atabaque. The lyrics which are traditionally in Portuguese, also dictate game characteristics.
